When North Carolina artisan Lee Spivey crafts sterling-silver jewelry, she often adds touches of gold and unusual gemstones. Free-flowing lines and organic forms are a constant among her one-of-a-kind designs.
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Spivey will be a special guest at the Museum Shop, located at the N.C. Museum of History, on Friday, Feb. 5, from 2 to 8 p.m. She incorporates heart designs into much of her jewelry, so come find that perfect gift for someone or treat yourself. Meet this popular tiffany 1837 jewelry designer from Wilmington, and see her creations that range from $20 to $200. Enjoy refreshments in the afternoon, or stop by for wine and cheese during Raleigh’s First Friday event that evening.
Spivey’s jewelry is extremely versatile. Her necklaces, bracelets, earrings and brooches look stunning with blue jeans and boots or with stilettos and a little black dress. “I make jewelry because it’s a way to express myself creatively, share my work, and help women feel even more beautiful,” says the designer and artist.
Spivey declares that she fell in love with metalsmithing while earning her bachelor of fine arts degree at East Carolina University. She has been featured in The Lapidary Journal.

CLINT EASTWOOD’S “Invictus” has given Morgan Freeman, a 72-year-old ever-rising cinematic star from Memphis, Tennessee, his best chance yet to show what a canny actor he is. The year is 1995, just 14 months after South Africa’s first multiracial elections. Nelson Mandela wants to use the rugby World Cup, for white South Africans the absolute pinnacle of sport, to prevent the veneer of social unity from being rent asunder. Mr Freeman plays Mandela as a man both burdened and blessed by having become a living icon after Frank Gehry jewelry of political struggle, many of them spent as the world’s most famous political prisoner. But the newly elected President Mandela is determined to make use of his image rather than letting it use him, and no director could understand this better than Mr Eastwood, who has always kept ahead of his audience by ringing unexpected changes on his own star persona. The confluence of these three wily men–Mr Freeman, Mr Eastwood and Mr Mandela–has given birth to a perfect storm of a character study.
Frail and stooped at 76, the former revolutionary calmly bucks his closest colleagues during his first days in office by insisting that post-apartheid South Africa can survive only if fear and hatred are consigned to the past. Addressing a group that has just voted to change the name and colours of the Afrikaners’ beloved Springbok rugby team, which blacks consider a symbol of oppression, he coolly explains that he spent his years in prison studying the enemy, and rugby is the ticket to winning their hearts.
He deploys a quaint, courtly charm when he takes tea with the Springboks captain, Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon), and discreetly lets him know that he would appreciate it if he would lead his losing team to a World Cup victory. And when he begins studiously memorising the names of the players and excusing himself from policy meetings to check on their progress, Mr Freeman lets the viewer glimpse the great man’s inner child, who is a mischievous boy becoming an ardent rugby fan.
The past casts only fleeting shadows: Mr Mandela finding a bracelet paloma picasso jewelry to his estranged wife; Pienaar visiting the Mandela cell. By incarnating a hero for whom leading well is the best revenge, Mr Freeman has enabled Mr Eastwood, Hollywood’s avenging angel, to make his sunniest film yet.

The sacred Osun grove today is a 75 hectare (185 acre) patch of primary forest alongside the Osun river in Osogbo, a Yoruba citykingdom and capital of Osun state in Southwest Nigeria. As the signboard erected at the entrance to the main river shrine states, the grove is the “Citadel of Osogbo History” (Fig. 3). As such it is full of “historical monuments, sculptures, and structures,” all created by members of the New Sacred Art Group founded by Wenger in the early 1960s. Scattered throughout the forest, the works vary in size, tiffany cuff links sale, and material. A coherent style does not exist. Buraimoh Gbadamosi’s stocky and compact stone sculptures differ strongly from Kasali Akangbe’s dynamic, elongated wooden carvings and Adeyemi Osenfs stylized cement figures (Figs. 4-5). While the latter show a restrained grace, Wenger’s cement architectures and plastics are excessive in their feverish celebration of expression. Yet different as the works in the Osun grove are, as gestures of respect to Yoruba religion they are all visible reminders of what constitutes Osogbo’s historical identity.
To the Nigerian public the Yoruba deity Osun and the Yoruba city Osogbo go together. People in Osogbo venerate Osun as their guardian deity and conduct an annual festival to honor and revive the relationship with her. In the numerous praise songs Osun is depicted as a big, massive woman tiffany earrings sale brass bangles, a brass fan, and a beaded comb. Her origin lies in Ekitiland west of Osogbo, the area where the Osun river originates. The river is in fact Osun’s epiphany, her liquid body as it were. Consequently Osun is first and foremost a water or fertility deity, but the notions associated with Osun are much wider, embracing imageries of healing, femininity, motherhood, sexuality, wealth, wisdom, knowledge, beauty, art, and power. Li fact, as Rowland Abiodun (2001) has pointed out, Osun has different identities, depending on the various conditions under which people have lent meaning to her, a strategy which fits well Osun’s changing role in history.
As the only female of the original seventeen Yoruba divinities who descended on earth, Osun plays a special role in Yoruba religion and politics. As the chapters osétúá in the divination corpus Ifa narrate, Osun was initially left out by the other male deities but later gained power and influence. Based on oral traditions and his own archaeological findings, Yoruba historian and archaeologist Akinwumi Ogundiran (2003:62fr.) has argued that Osun’s belated recognition and subsequent ascent in the pantheon of Yoruba Orisa might reflect historical transformations in the Yoruba/Edo corridor. According to Ogundiran the upper Osun region was once a frontier zone in which the agency of hunters, ambitious traders, and upstart political scions remapped hitherto existing sociopolitical boundaries and led to a fusion of artistic traditions between Benin and the Yoruba groups standing under the influence of Oyo, the dominant political power which had succeeded Ife in the seventeenth century.
Though speculative, Ogundiran’s scenario correlates with the history of Osogbo. Thus, until the early nineteenth century Osogbo played practically no role in Yoruba politics. Situated on the old Oyo/Ijesa boundary, the town stood in the shadow of Ilesa. With the collapse of Oyo and the subsequent struggle to fill the resulting power vacuum, this began to change. Osogbo became the frontline of two new regional powers: the Fulani coming from the north, advancing southwards, and the Ibadan marching northwards, determined to stem tiffany pendants aggression. Eventually, the Ibadan and Fulani armies clashed in around 1830 in the legendary Battle of Osogbo, during which the Ibadan troops defeated the Fulani army. In Osogbo itself, the defeat is credited not to the military strength of the Ibadan army but to the power of Osun. According to one version, Osun gave warning of an imminent Fulani attack by making a carving fall in the Osun shrine at the palace. Other versions tell how the deity turned into a food vendor who sold the Fulani poisoned beancakes, which killed many in the Fulani army and successfully ended its advance.

For all that, he was later referred to as a genius by no less than Winston Churchill for his tiffany bracelets sale exploits as the leader of the Chindits, the special guerrilla force in Burma that would play such a vital role in 1944 and 1945 in turning the tide in favor of the Allies in the Far East against a much larger Japanese army.
But it was in Ethiopia in early 1941, and to a lesser extent in Palestine in the 1930s, that Wingate developed the “long-range penetration” guerrilla tactics that would make his more famous exploits so successful. In Ethiopia he led a group of speciaDy trained Anglo-Ethiopian guerrillas that he dubbed the Gideon Force, after the biblical hero who destroyed a much larger enemy with only a few hundred men. His men infiltrated Italian lines, provided critical intelligence to the British High Command, and sowed panic with swift, brutal night raids. Wingate capped off the campaign in May 1941 by persuading 1 2,000 Italian troops to surrender to his 2,000-man force. As his colleague Sir Wilfred Thesiger later mused, “Wingate deserved a knighthood for what he did in Ethiopia.”
ORDE WINGATE’S UPBRINGING SHAPED HIM into the cantankerous, intransigent character he became. Born in. India in 1903, he was raised in England by a strict, fervently religious family with military roots (T. E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, was a distant cousin). From a very young age he was encouraged to be bold and self-reliant - which could and did foster rebelliousness.
At the Army Equestrian School at Weedon, Wingate annoyed his instructors by interrupting mealtimes with harangues on such polarizing subjects as Marxism, which he claimed to embrace. As one contemporary recalled, “He and I had one basic common belief: Regulations are made by sods for fools, and they are to be tiffany cuff links sale and not obeyed where inconvenient.”
By young adulthood, Wingate was suffering from undiagnosed clinical depression. Some have suggested that he exhibited classic symptoms of bipolar disorder. He would experience extreme highs and lows - flashes of confident exuberance, punctuated by what he described as “nervous attacks,” or his “particular curse.” Whatever the correct label, his mood fluctuations only underscored his growing reputation for peculiarity and unpredictability.
Early on, Wingate was greatly influenced by his father’s cousin, Sir Reginald Wingate, whom Orde called Cousin Rex. A retired army general who had served as governor-general of Sudan from 1899 to 1916 and high commissioner of Egypt from 1917 to 1919, Cousin Rex instilled in Wingate a keen interest in Middle Eastern politics and culture that over the years would curdle into obsession.
Wingate was accepted into the Sudan Defence Force in April 1925 and posted to the East Arab Corps. The SDF was considered quite glamorous - in many ways a precursor to the British Special Air Service and other special ops forces that were created during and after the war. Wingate served on the Ethiopian border, tiffany earrings sale the SDF prowled for slave traders and ivory poachers.

Soon we were joined by Buffett and Joe Pantorno, a soft-spoken restaurateur and striper fisherman from Nantucket. While Jimmy ordered in fluent French off the menu, I employed clever hand signals to indicate my selections: salade de mache et champignons (thinly sliced mushrooms), carre d’agneau (lamb), and, for dessert, a shredded-coconut tart. Fenia started with the soupe No 2 au poulet, moved on to the crevettes au curry jaune (daintily curried shrimp), and closed with sorbets.
The chef and co-owner, Maya Beuzelin-Gurley, came by our table to make sure we were happy and stuffed. The meal was devastatingly good, but still finer was the breezy down-island vibe. I’d been warned that even a type-triple-A personality such as mine would succumb to the infectious serenity of St. Bart’s, and by the end of the evening the transformation was under way. The Dow Jones had plummeted 370 points in one day, and truly I couldn’t have cared less.
Paying 1,600 euros a night for a hotel room is morally impossible to justify, but there’s no point in going to St. Bart’s if you insist on being fiscally responsible.
Early the next morning, we set out for Saline, a renowned crescent beach on the island’s tiffany pendants sale. Usually I refuse to go on beach trips; having grown up near Fort Lauderdale, I’d lost all fascination with that culture by age seven. Yet it must be said that the deep-running turquoise waters of the Caribbean are unlike any to be seen in southern Florida, and the absence of crowds and boom boxes is charming.
The wind at Saline was swirling and robust, lashing our faces with sand. Nonetheless, we couldn’t avoid the sight of a chubby naked man flopping like a drunken manatee in the waves. He’d obviously forgotten to apply sunblock and was scorching all aspects of his body to a crimson hue. There’s lots of enthusiastic nudity in St. Bart’s, not all of it well-advised.
We retreated to the yacht-clogged quay at Gustavia, parking crookedly on a sidewalk and setting out on foot into the shopping quarter. Here, the eye-popping markups were agreeably flaunted, each purchase made more painful because the euro was riding high against the sickly U.S. dollar. Regardless of the exchange rate, price tags in St. Bart’s should be approached like its traffic intersections–with eyes averted.
Maxing out one’s credit cards is part of the total experience and the formula to growth management on the island. Those eight square miles of paradise would have filled up and gone to seed long ago were it not for the purgative effect of outlandish pricing. Who would ever go home if they didn’t run out of money?
In one shop, a sculptor named Neil d’Ourson exhibited a hefty sphere that he said was made from the teeth of humans, cows, and dogs. He explained that he’d spent ten years collecting these dental treasures from local beaches. When I remarked that a beach seemed an odd place to find so many molars, particularly of a bovine variety, Neil shrugged in pensive agreement.
Before we left, he offered to make a molten-copper impression of Fenia’s lips, or, if we preferred, her tiffany bracelets sale button. Either way, the cost was 1,500 euros. We passed.
For lunch we chose the Sand Bar, an open-air cafe at the Eden Rock, in St. Jean, which is said to be a favored haunt of Mick Jagger, Madonna, and other celebs. On this afternoon, nobody famous was in evidence, yet life seemed to go on. I ordered parillada de poissons et crustaces (fresh fish and seafood served on a bed of greens) and a cold bottle of Carib beer. Fenia had a salad while we watched small planes lurch airborne from the same puny, windblown strip upon which we’d landed.
Afterward, we rented a couple of lounge chairs for 60 euros, or about $88, which is the most I’ve ever paid to park my butt on a beach. Our view of the bay was partially impeded by two topless women who’d bivouacked beneath a nearby umbrella and were determined to show off their surgeons’ mountainous handiwork. I hesitate to complain, but there are great boob jobs and not-so-great boob jobs, and the full gamut is on display in St. Bart’s.
